An esteemed faculty member from either the Department of History or the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures at the Ohio State University will be chairing each panel.
Ohio State University President E. Gordon Gee will welcome all participants during the reception to be held on the first evening of the conference. Furthermore, different distinguished leaders from the Ohio State University will open each day of the conference with a welcoming address: the first welcoming address will be given by Prof. Mark Shanda, Dean of Arts and Humanities, and by Prof. Dieter Wanner, the Associate Provost for Global Strategies and International Affairs; the second day will be opened by Dr. Craig Jenkins, Professor of Sociology and Director of the Mershon Center for International Security Studies. To close the conference, a musical concert will be held. A. J. Racy, PhD, an internationally renowned performer, composer, and Professor of Ethnomusicology at the University of California at Los Angeles, will perform with Suhail Kaspar, a highly acclaimed performer on Near Eastern percussion instruments, Director of the S. K. Near East Music Ensemble, and a winner of the Durfee Foundation award.

Prof. Georges Tamer
Dr. Georges Tamer taught at the Freie Universität Berlin and the Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg in Germany; he was also a visiting professor at the Central European University (in Budapest, Hungary). Named a Fellow of the Working Group on Modernity and Islam at the Institute for Advanced Study in Berlin, he was also a member of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. He is currently the M.S. Sofia Chair in Arabic Studies at the Ohio State University.
Before he joined OSU, he organized two international and interdisciplinary conferences in Germany: “The Trias of Maimonides. Jewish, Arabic and Ancient Culture of Knowledge”, which was held at Erlangen on July 7-11, 2004, and “Humor in Arabic Culture”, which took place at the Freie Universität Berlin on July 5-7, 2007. Research Interests: Hermeneutics of the Qur’an; Arabic poetry; medieval Arabic philosophy as well as its reception in modern political philosophy; Islamic theology; contemporary Islamic thought and Christian- and Judeo-Arabic literature
